The Fichtelgebirge is rich in many small, shiny mosaic stones, which come together to form a true shining cultural mosaic. We would like to give you some information about the most valuable sights, cultural-historical and unique geological sites of this wonderful region in the north of Bavaria. We would really like to recommend you to visit these important cultural sites. Support the preservation of these unique cultural and historical sites with your visit. These places are cultural treasures that are second to none and depend mainly on entrance fees and donations. Help us to protect and preserve these highlights in and around the Fichtelgebirge.
The roots of the cultural highlights go back to the year 1016 and the first settlers in the Fichtelgebirge. The arc can be traced back to the historical climax of the reign of the Bayreuth margrave couple Wilhelmine and Friedrich to our days. New forms of activities have constantly developed. And one must not forget: eating and drinking well has also become a part of Franconian everyday culture. This especially on noble porcelain, which is born from the fire in the center of the "White Gold". Visit Selb - the city of white gold and discover the “Egerland” along the Porcelain Road.
Famous artists such as Georg Dientzenhofer and Elias Raentz were active in the Fichtelgebirge - the theater and festival scene is rich here. The heritage of the fathers is lovingly preserved in museums that are worth seeing and sometimes unusual, and the songs of the people live on in the numerous musical groups and performances in the region.
Not much needs to be said about Richard Wagner. Every year, his festival makes Bayreuth a "temporary world city." This is also a contribution to the multicultural scene of this region.
The Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth is a cultural monument of a special kind and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.
Richard Wagner, with the help of the Bavarian "fairy tale king" Ludwig II - brought a new highlight to the former residential city with the construction of the festival theater on the green hill.
Much older are the Luisenburg Festival on the natural stage of Europe's largest rock labyrinth near Wunsiedel. Here, against the magnificent backdrop of Germany's oldest and probably most beautiful natural stage, theater has been performed since 1692, but probably longer. From the end of May to the beginning of September there is theater of the highest quality.
The beginnings of the monastery in Waldsassen probably date back to around 1130, as a center for the colonization of Cistercian monks. They came from the Bavarian “Nordgau” to the later “Egerland” for the reclamation of the still "wild" area for the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation". The monastery has had an eventful history. Particularly worth seeing and a true gem is the monastery library from 1726.
Porcelain in all its variations is best enjoyed in the German Porcelain Museum in Hohenberg a. d. Eger. This was the cradle of the Bavarian porcelain industry. If you want to know how porcelain is made, you should visit Selb. Here, in the European Industrial Museum of Porcelain and Ceramics, one gets a proper respect for the work of all "porcelain makers" and suddenly understands why a high-quality piece sometimes costs as much as a small car.
The region is still one of the most industrialized areas in Germany. The region is proud of its past as the "Ruhr area of the Middle Ages" and is happy to show visitors how the miners of earlier centuries had to slave away. There is a visitor mine in Fichtelberg.
For those who are now really thirsty, a visit to one of the world's largest brewery museums at the Maisel brothers in Bayreuth is recommended.
