Activities

The Fichtelgebirge is characterized by beautiful nature, friendly people and, last but not least, excellent cuisine and outstanding beers. The adventure region lives up to its name. In addition to the well-developed network of bike paths, which for example leads from the Marktredwitz Auenpark via the Goldsteig to Passau in Lower Bavaria, there are varied routes for all hiking enthusiasts. One highlight is the guided 12-summit tour, on which all the mountains of the Fichtelgebirge are climbed in a ten-hour hike.

In summer, the numerous bathing lakes or the Marktredwitz natural open-air swimming pool invite you to relax - with free admission. Summer in the Fichtelgebirge also means "festival time at the Luisenburg" - Germany's oldest open-air theater. The countless festivals, events and traditional events in the large district town of Marktredwitz and the other towns in the district of Wunsiedel offer plenty of variety. In the cold season, winter sports enthusiasts get their money's worth - whether alpine skiers, cross-country skiers, sledders, ice skaters or winter bikers.

The Fichtelgebirge not only attracts with attractive recreational opportunities - it is also an excellent place to live and work. A large number of well-known companies - some of them operating worldwide - are located in Marktredwitz or the region and offer a wide range of qualified jobs. A very good offer of day care centers as well as a wide range of schools also provide the best conditions for children and young people. Low cost of living as well as a very good quality of living and living conditions also speak for the charming area.

The horseshoe-shaped low mountain range is always worth a visit - whether for business or pleasure, as a vacationer or resident. Welcome to the fascinating Fichtelgebirge!

Nature Reserve Fichtelgebirge

The Fichtelgebirge could be called the "roof top of Franconia". For in all of northern Bavaria there are no higher mountains than the twelve peaks that form the horseshoe of the Fichtelgebirge. Schneeberg and Ochsenkopf tower over the landscape at over 1000 meters, especially the area around Bayreuth, which lies much lower in front. On clear days, the peaks of the Fichtelgebirge offer magnificent panoramic views as far as the Franconian Forest, the Ore Mountains, the Upper Palatinate Forest and the Czech Imperial Forest (Slavkovsy Les). Therefore, hikers will find viewing platforms or facilities to climb the rock towers on almost all peaks. The wide views were of great importance even in earlier times. In the Middle Ages, fortified knight's castles crowned the peaks of Rudolfstein, Waldstein, Epprechtstein, Luxburg (today Luisenburg) and Kornberg.

Tip: If you want to see all the mountain peaks at once, you have to drive to Roeslau. At the end of the village in the direction of Duernberg, at the geographical center of the Fichtelgebirge, there is the so-called Zwoelfgipfelblick. From here you can overlook the entire Horseshoe circuit.

The Fichtelgebirge is best known for the four major rivers that have their source here: From its "white" source on the Ochsenkopf, the Main flows through all of Franconia and acts as a lifeline on its way, shaping the nature, culture and history of this area. The Eger rises on the western slope of the Schneeberg. Its course crosses the Fichtelgebirge from west to east. Once upon a time, the next largest and formerly important free imperial city of Eger, today Cheb, also bore its name. This river flows far into Bohemia into the Czech Republic and finally flows into the Elbe. The Saxon Saale, whose source can be found on the northern slope of the Waldstein, also finally flows into the Elbe after a long journey northward. So, all three rivers ultimately head for the North Sea. The Naab is an exception. It flows from the Ochsenkopf in a southerly direction through the Upper Palatinate and finally flows into the Danube. Its waters end after many thousands of kilometers in the Black Sea. This makes the Fichtelgebirge the main European watershed.

Steinwald

Nestled between the Fichtelgebirge and the Upper Palatinate Forest, the granite ridge of the Steinwald, over 900 meters high, arches up to form a striking landscape of the northern Upper Palatinate. The closed forest landscape is characterized by coniferous trees, interspersed again and again with beautiful mixed stands.

Wind and weather have gnawed steeply rising, bizarrely shaped rock groups out of the hard primary rock: Raeuberfelsen, Vogelfelsen, Saubadfelsen and many others. On the Platte, the 946 meter high main peak of the Steinwald, the Oberpfalz Tower was built, which offers a wide panoramic view.

The nature park "Steinwald" occupies an area of just under 23,000 ha. It is thus the second smallest of the 19 nature parks in Bavaria. Located in the northeast of Bavaria, near the Czech border, the nature park is easily accessible for residents of the surrounding large cities.

The lake is very suitable for swimming and recreation and it is a paradise for fishing and excursions. Various hiking trails lead there. There is also a camping site, a restaurant and a parking lot at the lake.

Its history begins as early as 1870, when alum ore and brown coal were mined there - and the "Klausenteich" was created in an open pit. Lake Weissenstadt

The Lake Weissenstadt is the largest lake in the heart of the Fichtelgebirge with about 50 ha. A popular destination for young and old!

It is an artificially dammed lake, which is located at the headwaters of the Eger and is fed by it and the Hirtenbach. Historically, it is interesting that the lake was re-established in 1976 where the Weißenstadt town pond was located until 1820. This dried up due to the opening of the dams and 200 parcels of land were created on the area. The town bought back the land in the mid-1970s and rebuilt the lake, which is used exclusively for recreational purposes.

The lake, which is accessible to all, offers visitors relaxation, recreation and a wealth of sporting opportunities. The easily accessible 4 km long lakeside path is one of the most visited walking trails in the Fichtelgebirge for young and old and is also ideally suited for wheelchair users.

Sailing and surfing are permitted in the designated sports zone. Ideal access for these activities is the large parking lot in the southwest of the lake. This is also the site of the local sailing club. The operation of motor-driven boats is not allowed. The Lake Weissenstadt offers numerous water sports.

The surroundings of the lake are perfect for enjoying the tranquility of nature and the harmony of the landscape.

Treat yourself to a rest on one of the many benches around the lake and enjoy the magnificent view of the Grosser Waldstein and the Schneeberg, the highest mountain in northern Bavaria.

Lake Untreu Hof

In the south of the city, but still in the urban area, lies the recreational area "Untreusee". Although man-made, the lake blends into the soft, hilly landscape as if nature itself had produced it. It is a paradise for swimmers, sailors, surfers and anglers, but also for walkers and people who are simply looking for peace and quiet. The Untreusee has long since ceased to be a facility used only by people from Hof. It is appreciated in the whole region (and beyond).

Even though several thousand people "populate" its waters and shores, there is still plenty of room for anyone seeking solitude and tranquility.

The Untreusee, named after the Untreubach, which feeds it, was built as a leisure and local recreation facility between 1976 and 1979.

As a secondary water management function, it serves to raise the low water level of the Saxon Saale in the late fall and as flood retention in the winter months.

The lake, which is about 2 kilometers long and 700 meters wide and on which almost all water sports are permitted with the exception of motor boating, has a surface area of 600,000 square meters in summer at normal water levels. The water depth is about 15 meters at the artificially built 300-meter-long dam. In the southern part of the lake, separated by 4 footbridges, an important biotope of interest to nature lovers has been created at the inlet of the "Untreubach".

Culture

The Fichtelgebirge is rich in many small, shiny mosaic stones, which come together to form a true shining cultural mosaic. We would like to give you some information about the most valuable sights, cultural-historical and unique geological sites of this wonderful region in the north of Bavaria. We would really like to recommend you to visit these important cultural sites. Support the preservation of these unique cultural and historical sites with your visit. These places are cultural treasures that are second to none and depend mainly on entrance fees and donations. Help us to protect and preserve these highlights in and around the Fichtelgebirge.

The roots of the cultural highlights go back to the year 1016 and the first settlers in the Fichtelgebirge. The arc can be traced back to the historical climax of the reign of the Bayreuth margrave couple Wilhelmine and Friedrich to our days. New forms of activities have constantly developed. And one must not forget: eating and drinking well has also become a part of Franconian everyday culture. This especially on noble porcelain, which is born from the fire in the center of the "White Gold". Visit Selb - the city of white gold and discover the “Egerland” along the Porcelain Road.

Famous artists such as Georg Dientzenhofer and Elias Raentz were active in the Fichtelgebirge - the theater and festival scene is rich here. The heritage of the fathers is lovingly preserved in museums that are worth seeing and sometimes unusual, and the songs of the people live on in the numerous musical groups and performances in the region.

Not much needs to be said about Richard Wagner. Every year, his festival makes Bayreuth a "temporary world city." This is also a contribution to the multicultural scene of this region.

The Margravial Opera House in Bayreuth is a cultural monument of a special kind and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.

Richard Wagner, with the help of the Bavarian "fairy tale king" Ludwig II - brought a new highlight to the former residential city with the construction of the festival theater on the green hill.

Much older are the Luisenburg Festival on the natural stage of Europe's largest rock labyrinth near Wunsiedel. Here, against the magnificent backdrop of Germany's oldest and probably most beautiful natural stage, theater has been performed since 1692, but probably longer. From the end of May to the beginning of September there is theater of the highest quality.

The beginnings of the monastery in Waldsassen probably date back to around 1130, as a center for the colonization of Cistercian monks. They came from the Bavarian “Nordgau” to the later “Egerland” for the reclamation of the still "wild" area for the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation". The monastery has had an eventful history. Particularly worth seeing and a true gem is the monastery library from 1726.

Porcelain in all its variations is best enjoyed in the German Porcelain Museum in Hohenberg a. d. Eger. This was the cradle of the Bavarian porcelain industry. If you want to know how porcelain is made, you should visit Selb. Here, in the European Industrial Museum of Porcelain and Ceramics, one gets a proper respect for the work of all "porcelain makers" and suddenly understands why a high-quality piece sometimes costs as much as a small car.

The region is still one of the most industrialized areas in Germany. The region is proud of its past as the "Ruhr area of the Middle Ages" and is happy to show visitors how the miners of earlier centuries had to slave away. There is a visitor mine in Fichtelberg.

For those who are now really thirsty, a visit to one of the world's largest brewery museums at the Maisel brothers in Bayreuth is recommended.

Further cultural highlights can be found in the following recommendations. Our “Auenpark” in Marktredwitz deserves special mention here. We would be very pleased if you would actively support this enchanting piece of parkland. Whether with donations or the participation in actions plays no role. We are a member and supporter of the “Foerderverein Auenpark Marktredwitz”.

By visiting the following cultural sites and estates you contribute to their preservation by supporting these places with your entrance fees and donations. In the “Auenpark” you are welcome to lend a hand with the various activities. A schedule of activities is linked under the heading “Auenpark”.

Large county city Marktredwitz

Marktredwitz is located in the valley of the small river Koessein, embedded in a charming low mountain range landscape between the mountain ranges of the Fichtelgebirge and the Steinwald, only a few kilometers from the border to the Czech Republic.

Marktredwitz is known as an attractive shopping town and as the location of globally successful industrial companies. "Rawetz", as the locals call their town, is also a school location with a wide range of schooling options and for vacationers the starting point for varied hiking and biking tours.

Christmas time is traditionally Nativity time in Marktredwitz. An artistic mountain landscape in miniature is created from stones, roots, moss and berries, in which hundreds of small clay figures recreate everyday scenes from the mountains. The focus of Marktredwitz's nativity scene culture is the knowledge of the meaning and history of the figures and scenes.

The local population revived the Marktredwitz Nativity Trail in 1989. Since then, between December 26 and January 6, many people from Marktredwitz open their houses to present their works. The Nativity Scene Trail includes 20 to 25 stations, which sometimes attract thousands of visitors. The Marktredwitz crib culture belongs to the intangible UNESO cultural heritage.

Auenpark Marktredwitz

The Marktredwitzer are justifiably proud of their Auenpark. With large financial commitment it succeeded on the occasion of the transnational national horticultural show 2006, an industrial wasteland between the Dreiboegenbruecke and the Doerflaser place, first into an attractive horticultural show and afterwards into a citizen park to convert.

Until the garden show, the area was inaccessible and mainly used for industry and commerce. Now the Auenpark presents itself as a beautiful recreational area in the immediate vicinity of our city center. Next to the old town, it has become the second good parlor for the citizens and guests of Marktredwitz.

The forthcoming new use of the former Benker site, together with the park, will make it one of the most interesting and promising residential and service areas in our city.

Today, after the end of the National Garden Show, the Auenpark is a green park with a special flair. The Foerderverein Auenpark e.V. would like to preserve the park for the citizens as a special place for recreation, but also for cultural encounters. Therefore, the members of the Foerderverein are committed to the Auenpark and its future.

The Avaneo Hotel Marktredwitz is a member of the Foerderverein Auenpark. The guests of the hotel are cordially invited to participate in and support the various activities in the Auenpark.

With donations and active support, we can continue to organize cheerful festivities in the park, feature magnificent plantings tended by members and supporters, and convince with sports and play events for children and young people.  Thanks to your support, the Auenpark will continue to be an attractive meeting place for all Marktredwitz citizens and its guests from near and far.

Festival City Wunsiedel

"I am gladly born in you, small but good, light city", this is how the famous Wunsiedel poet Jean Paul describes the festival city of Wunsiedel!

The citizen park Katharinenberg is the oldest park in Bavaria built by citizens. The "Wunsiedler Hausberg" owes its name to the former pilgrimage church of St. Katharina from the 14th century. Once an important pilgrimage site, the church ruins with their special sacred ambience still inspire locals and guests at church services and cultural events. After almost 6 years of restoration, the partially restored paths, historic gardens and lookout points are worth seeing.

For children, especially the recognized environmental station as a place of learning nature-culture is the new enrichment in the citizen park. The state-recognized environmental station teaches about the diversity of flora and fauna that is unique to our region. In practice-oriented workshops, the relationship between man and his animate or inanimate environment can be experienced at close quarters.

Wunsiedel is also the "town of fountains". On the weekend before St. John's Day (June 24), more than 34 fountains are lovingly decorated with flowers by the townspeople according to an old custom. Singers and musicians’ parade from fountain to fountain at dusk, serenading the crowds. This uniqueness prompted the Committee of Experts at the German UNSECO Commission to include the Wunsiedl Fountain Festival in the nationwide list of intangible cultural heritage.

Come visit us and experience much more: Hike in the footsteps of Jean-Paul and Queen Luise, explore the largest natural stone archive in the world, experience relaxation and recreation in the local recreation area along the Eisweiher, discover the diverse rock and mineral collection of the Fichtelgebirge Museum and experience our numerous festivals and events!

Park Theresienstein Hof

The park already impressed Goethe during his visit in 1806. But the area was to become even more beautiful in the following centuries: in 2003, Theresienstein was named the most beautiful German park.

Only a few steps away from the city center, one can find one of the most beautiful German parks, the citizen park Theresienstein. It is an oasis of tranquility; nature presents itself gracefully here and obviously plays out all its charms. However, many people also come here because of the numerous places of strength and happiness, which encourage them to pause, switch off and recharge their batteries.

In 1819, a previously bare area on a rocky elevation above the Saale, the “Fröhlichenstein”, was planted and designed as a park. In the meantime, it has become a recreational area of around 70 hectares, which visitors and locals alike enjoy using - a classic landscape garden that has been repeatedly expanded and redesigned over the course of time.

Bayreuth Festival

A theater created for a single composer: the Bayreuth “Festspielhaus”. With an auditorium in which music unfolds like in no other theater in the world. Without ostentation, reduced to the essentials: the experience of his works as a celebration.

Connoisseurs, friends, skeptics - they all come to the “Grüner Hügel” every summer to engage with his legacy, away from the big cultural metropolises. Since 1876, when he first performed his "Ring des Nibelungen" as a cycle.

Richard Wagner: revolutionary, utopian - his legacy remains alive here. At the most exciting music theater festival in the world.

Monastery City of Waldsassen

Enjoy a vacation with plenty of space, restful tranquility and relaxed hospitality.

The monastery town of Waldsassen, whose origins date back to the founding of the Cistercian monastery in 1133, is one of the most beautiful vacation destinations in the “Stiftland” vacation region in northeastern Bavaria and offers a package full of surprising vacation ideas.

Waldsassen is one of 100 places of pleasure in Bavaria, many inns and cafes provide for your successful stop. Cyclists and hikers will find a wonderful selection for their tours. Creatively designed squares, extensive nature and cordial citizens make for relaxing vacations.  The magnificent basilica and the large figures in the abbey library will definitely impress you. Take a detour to the forest adventure trail, to the “Kappl”, Kneipp in the monastery garden and find the coziest corners or join a feeding at the ostrich farm!

The pilgrimage to the “Kappl” church looks back on a long tradition: the roots go back to the time when the Waldsassen monastery was founded around the year 1133.

Basilica: Already the first view into the interior of the church shows that the basilica rightly belongs to the most important and most splendid baroque churches of the South German area.

After the Thirty Years' War, the church was one of the first truly sophisticated new buildings and - along with Passau Cathedral - the largest sacred building in Bavaria at the time. Abbot Martin Dallmayr (1612-1690) initiated the new building, Abbot Albert Hausner (1690-1710) was able to complete it. Both won renowned artists of their time for it.

Their ingenious collaboration created a church space of special harmony and radiance, for the greater glory of God and the joy of the people who worship here and visit this church.

Land of the 1000 ponds

This unique pond landscape in the heart of Europe is a popular recreational area and at the same time one of the oldest fish farming areas in Europe.

In the east of the district Tirschenreuth lies a unique pond area, the Tirschenreuther “Teichpfanne”. Approximately 2,500 ponds lie side by side as if strung on a string of pearls. The substrate for this pond landscape is kaolin, which is also used for porcelain production. The pond pan is part of a geological rift valley, without which this amphibious natural landscape would not exist.

About 1100 years ago, ponds began to be created on the marshy terrain around Tirschenreuth. This profitable special agricultural crop was extended more and more in the course of the Middle Ages. At the beginning of the 17th century, a statistical survey in the area of the Waldsassen monastery counted 4,625 ponds. Today, the Tirschenreuth pond basin not only serves the fishing industry, it is also a popular recreational area. Several cycling and hiking trails cross this man-made pond landscape, whose flora and fauna are exceptional. Part of the pond basin lies in the area of the “Waldnaabaue” nature conservation project. The district of Tirschenreuth is one of four fishery promotion areas of the EU in Bavaria. Visible signs are the annual Fish Experience Weeks from the end of September to mid-November.

House of Culture Egerland

The Egerland Culture House in Marktredwitz serves the cultural preservation of Egerland traditions. The origins go back to Expellees of the Egerland, who collected souvenirs and memorabilia of their homeland as early as 1949.

The first Egerland museums were established in Regensburg and Bayreuth. Since the market town of Redwitz (Marktredwitz) had belonged to the Egerland empire for centuries, an Egerland culture house was also established here. The town of Marktredwitz was connected to the Czech town of Cheb (Eger) for a very long time and did not become part of the Kingdom of Bavaria and thus of present-day Germany until 1816.

The Egerland Culture House contains the Egerland Museum, the Egerland Art Gallery, where special exhibitions are held from time to time, and a study library.

The newly designed Egerland Museum is mainly dedicated to the cultural history of Egerland in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century and the history of the expelled Egerlanders. The complex and extensive collection of exhibits is structured and presented according to the latest didactic and design aspects: thus, the visitor wanders through the history of the Egerland in a journey through time.

Rogg-In

Since the beginning of July 2014, the ROGG-IN has enriched the cultural landscape in the Fichtelgebirge. On 300 m² inside and approx. 1300 m² outside you can experience the theme "Rye - The Gold of the Region" in a variety of ways. Rye was once the main bread grain in the Fichtelgebirge. The relatively undemanding "gold of the region" ensured the bread supply of the local population, as it thrived on the meager soils.

The „Foerderverein für Roggen-Kultur in Weißenstadt“ does not aim at a mere knowledge transfer on the subject of "rye". Through the operation of the ROGG-IN, it recalls the cultural-historical and nutritional-physiological importance of rye. In doing so, it promotes appreciation for this grain and thus contributes to a respectful and sustainable approach to bread.

German-German Museum Moedlareuth

The Americans called it "Little Berlin," this village at the end of the world that, like its big brother, became a symbol of German division. In Moedlareuth there was a wall, but no checkpoint. For over 37 years, it was not possible to legally cross the border to get from one part of the village to the other. Here was a restricted area on the one side and a crowd of visitors on the other. Here it was forbidden to wave or greet from east to west.

A border right through the middle of a small village - the reasons for this in Moedlareuth go back centuries. In 1810 new boundary stones were set along the “Tannbach”. The carved initials "KB" (Kingdom of Bavaria) on the western, "FR" (Principality of Reuß) on the eastern side still document Moedlareuth's affiliation to various sovereigns.

Ochsenkopf Mountain

At 1,024 meters, the legendary Ochsenkopf mountain is the second highest mountain in the Fichtelgebirge. It is the most famous mountain in Upper Franconia and the Fichtelgebirge and is located about 20 kilometers (as the crow flies) northeast of the Upper Franconian government town of Bayreuth. It is also the mountain that attracts the most visitors. This is primarily due to the fact that it is easy to get to its summit. Since 1969, chairlifts have been leading to the mountain from the north (Froebershammer, part of the municipality of Bischofsgruen) and from the south (Fleckl, part of the municipality of Warmensteinach), which, after renovation work, are among the most modern lifts of their kind. In winter, the two ski slopes and cross-country ski trails attract many winter sports enthusiasts.

Even from a distance, the Ochsenkopf can be recognized by its "thin, long needle" (saying of a Berliner). In 1958, the reinforced concrete tower was completed, which at that time provided radio broadcasts not only to the people of the Fichtelgebirge, but also to many citizens of the former GDR. But the real landmark of the mountain is the "Asenturm", the lookout tower of the “Fichtelgebirgsverein e.V.” with a day restaurant.

In summer a mecca for hikers, mountain bikers, summer tobogganers and climbers, in winter a paradise for downhill and cross-country skiers, the Ochsenkopf is a worthwhile destination for families and sports enthusiasts, for locals and tourists alike, all year round.
